having been involved in the construction and inspection business for many years, i can tell you smoke detectors not only save lives, but are often overlooked by contractors. most people don't realize that almost 80 counties in the commmonwealth have no form of building inspection whatsoever. the intent herein is to allow the OHBC to offer a proposal to implement standards to ensure NFPA 72 Complaint smoke detectors are installed in all new homes.

As far as I know, it's already code to put fire detectors in new homes. My new home, purchased a few years ago, had them in every bedroom and large living area, as well as the basement and garage.

However, if people want to be irresponsible and burn up in a house fire because they wanted to save $40, so be it. I don't want the "Kentucky Fire Detection Device Enforcement Agency" to exist, much less enter my home.

You may recall for the last umpteen years local governments have been putting smoke detectors in public housing only to find time after time the batteries were almost never in the device at time of fire. Who in the world do you think should police this idiotic idea?
