For those wondering where the rest of our four legged friends aren't covered under this act, you should take a look at
KRS 525.125
and
KRS 525.130

The only thing changing in KRS 525.135 is
From:
(3)Torture of a dog or cat is a Class A misdemeanor for the first offense, and a Class D felony for the second and subsequent offenses.

To:
(3)Torture of a dog or cat is a Class D felony.

I TOO THANK YOU FOR INTRODUCING THE BILL. AND NEWMAN OR MEWMARK IN MY OPINION IS A SICKO. I ALSO THINK THAT ANYONE WHO PARTICIPATES IN PIT BULL FIGHTING SHOULD BE DRENCHED IN BLOOD AND THROWN IN WITH PIT BULLS. AND I HOPE IF MEWMAN OR NEWMARK(THE FIRST ONE WHO COMMENTED) GETS INJURED OR MAIMED FAMILY JUST PUTS A BULLET IN HIS HEAD. DOESN'T THE BIBLE SAY GOD MADE ALL ANIMALS LARGE AND SMALL? THANK YOU AGAIN FOR PUTTING THIS BILL UP

4) what the Bible says [by newmark on December 16, 2007]
Yes, the Bible does say God made all creatures, big and small. God also put Man in charge of those animals.

Depending on how bad the injury is, I might just want that bullet.

I know a good Psychiatrist for you to see. If this State was run by you, I'd vote for an animal instead. My husband has Lung Cancer, do you want to shoot him? You better read your Bible a little more too. I believe you'll burn in Hell & anyone else who abuse any animal. You're a sicko.

6) Humans are different, than pets [by newmark on January 20, 2008]
Humans are different than other animals. I value humans over any and all animals. I believe that most people do.

As far as someone who's ill, we obviously try to heal them. But with pets, we often just choose euthanasia.

And while on the topic, I personally believe it is my right to take my own life, if I so choose (and legally I can - it's only illegal if you fail). And I might exercise that right if I were terminally ill, facing a long-term, painful end.

I think the core difference here is that I'm thinking logically about this, and your feeling emotionally about this.

Of course I think people that abuse animals have a few screws loose. That's obvious to anyone. But I disagree that animals should be given the same protections as human beings, as it, in my opinion, diminishes the value of human life. (Which also leads into a conversation about how police dogs are treated like people, but let's skip that.)

How people treat their PROPERTY is their own business. Logically following this, animals and pets are property. People, on the other hand, are the property, of themselves.

If you want to be equal to cattle, fine. But personally, I value people more than potential food.

7) WTF? [by newmark on December 15, 2007]
Okay, why cats and dogs only, first off? Are they a special class of not-humans that they get special protection?

Can I torture a horse, pig, cow, chicken, gerbil, mouse, rat, or anything else that isn't human, canine or feline, and that's cool?

What happens if a dog is maimed or otherwise severely wounded? Can I put it down by putting a bullet in it, like we used to do before we became a nation of pansies? Or do we have to take it to the vet and pay a thousand dollars to accomplish the same thing?

I know this is Michael Vick reactionary law. I know that dog fighting is sick and twisted. But at the end of the day, animals are property, just like any other animal that you purchase or have given to you. In some Asian countries, dog and cat is what's for dinner (or, the other White Meat, or Spot Roast. Whatever).

Point is, giving special protection to certain animals is like giving special protection to certain people because of skin color of sexual preference. It's just wrong.

The person who tortures ANYTHING is in need of a serious 'adjustment'. You or I do not have the right to inflict pain or harm to any creature on this planet for our own enjoyment. We also do not have the right to profit from these acts like the sick #%$^*^*&^*$%s that put on the dog fights. Perhaps some of you should think about the 'Bait animals' and how they suffer and die while be used as training aids for fighting dogs.

9) what about fishing? [by newmark on January 20, 2008]
Speaking of inflicting pain for entertainment, I doubt that the minnow I put at the end of a fishing rod enjoys having a hook shoved through it and then being thrown by that hook into the water to be used as bait.

By your logic, should we protect the minnow?

Make it as punitive as possible.
Thanks for introducing it.
