1) LIBERTY AND JUSTICE? [by Anonymous Citizen on July 26, 2007] I’m not quite certain what history book you’ve been reading but the lovely story about the Pilgrims founding our nation with liberty and justice is ridiculous. The first colony in North America was Jamestown which was founded in 1607 with a charter given to the Virginia Company from King James I. The Virginia Company and King James I were financially vested in this venture; they hoped to find gold, silver, and silks. The colonies, contrary to your religious babble, were established for money--profit. These investors wanted wealthy returns. This capitalistic nation was built on the backs of European refugees and the second sons of nobility trying to find a life outside the bleak futures of Europe. Later, in 1620, the Pilgrims did arrive hoping to establish some religious utopia apart from the Church in England and the draconian sense of the time which believed that the government should impose religious uniformity. They escaped burning, disembowelment, and other inhumane forms of religious persecution. Make no mistake, America was a religious refuge, but in no way is the United States birthed from some Puritan agenda. However, when the United States was formed it did declare something you might find interesting. In the eloquent words of Thomas Jefferson, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” In your eyes men are not created equal. In your world it’s simply “us” and “them.” In the world you espouse everyone is just like you, believes just like you, and spews injustice, just like you. Perhaps in your ignorant and bigoted mind the right to pursue happiness doesn’t include healthcare for gay persons. Maybe the America whose flag you so righteously wave represents something of which you know nothing. A puritanical nation of justice and liberty? In what free and just society are hard-working people denied healthcare? Next time, before you assume you have facts and an idea, and before you take a moment to type out some delusional message, 1) take a history course on colonial and revolutionary America; 2) find a dictionary and define the words you place in BOLD; 3) reread the Bible you wave in my face and realize you’re the very type of person Christ came to condemn. 3) Seperation of church and state. [by Anonymous Citizen on March 26, 2007] For the government to force it's religious beliefs on anyone is against the law. I doubt highly that this will pass, but IF it does, it could easily be brought in front of the Supreme Court.
To use the bible to defend this action is contradictory. To say that the bible condems homosexuality is close minded and shows that a person uses bits and pieces to defend his/her position, when he/she should not. The bible also condones slavery. In the exact same passage that "condems" homosexuality, it also condems the eating of pork and shellfish, as well as usery. Paid any interest on a loan or credit card lately? More than a bit hypocritical in my eyes... Reply
